Amarante Carvalho has a Masters Degree in Law (LL.M.) from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago.

He also has a Bachelor's Degree in Law (LL.B.) and a Master's Degree in Law (LL.M.) from the University of Bombay.

He was a Fellow at Siddarth College of Law at Bombay for a period of two years and a part-time Professor at the same College, for an additional two years. Later, he worked as a Prosecutor at Bombay for about two and one-half years.

In September 1974, he was awarded a fellowship by Northwestern University School of Law, pursuant to which he earned a Master's degree in Law.

In October 1983, he was the proud recipient of a Certificate of Appreciation from the Chicago Bar Association.The Certificate was awarded for his services as a participating volunteer in the joint program of the Legal Services Institute and the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation to render free legal representation to the indigent.
